Companion Planting - Marigolds
Hello,
I am just doing a bit of research on companion planting and wanted to record some of my findings here so that I could easily relocate them.
A good companion plant if the French Marigold.
The French Marigold flower exudes a potent substance (thiophene) in their roots and leaves. The theory is that in the immediate vicinity, the substance might catch and kill some of the pests called ‘root-knot nematodes’, a common pest of many vegetables, flowers, and shrubs. Aphids /White flies also hate the smell of the Marigold.
Ants Hate Marigolds. There are a few flowers that are known to deter ants from their area. One of the best known is the marigold. Plant a few of these around the borders of your garden or near plants you want really well protected.
